Before Exploring
Ask students to explain why they think Leonard Cohen is such a respected writer. (If students have not completed other activities about Leonard Cohen, give them some time to visit the Leonard Cohen topic.
Outline the Opportunity
Explain to students that they will be writing a formal, critical essay that analyzes Leonard Cohen’s songs and/or poems. Topics might include: images of women, symbols, sensory images, archetypes, biblical images and/or references, and themes. To gather information about Cohen and his work, students will conduct a Web search, using both the CBC Digital Archives Web site and other online resources about Leonard Cohen. Students may also use other research sources.
Revisit and Reflect
Provide students with time to complete their essay, to edit it and have it peer edited, and to make any necessary revisions.
