Summary
In this introductory activity, students create a timeline showing when various groups gained the right to vote in Canada.
Duration
2 lessons
Purpose
To understand the evolution of the right to vote
Lesson Plan
Before Exploring
Discuss with students what they know about voting in Canada. Have them identify what they understand about who has the right to vote in our country. Explain how the voting process allows the voice of the people to be heard.
Outline the Opportunity
Divide the class into small groups. Direct them to the topic Voting in Canada: How a Privilege Became a Right on the CBC Radio and Television Archives Web site and have them browse all the clips. As they view, they should identify the various groups who gained the right to vote in Canada. Have them arrange the events in chronological order to create a timeline.
Revisit and Reflect
Invite each group to share its timeline with the class. Collate all of their information onto a single timeline and display it in the class. Ask students to consider and discuss the impact if any one of these groups did not gain the right to vote.
Extension
Students can choose one of the groups with which they identify or empathize, and write in their journal to describe why it is personally important to them that that group got the right to vote.
