Lesson Plan
Before Exploring
Several people around the world have come before the courts to argue for a person’s right to end his or her life. Sue Rodriguez is one of Canada’s most famous to take this fight to the top courts. Though she failed to get euthanasia and assisted suicide made legal, she forced a crucial debate on this difficult topic.
Outline the Opportunity
Students will prepare a presentation that highlights a group or a person involved in a case related to the euthanasia debate.

Have each group browse the Internet for possible cases. You may want to approve each group’s choice before students continue. Groups will then research the history of the group or person, summarize the fight for or against euthanasia, and analyze the decision and outcome of the battle they chose.
Revisit and Reflect
Have students present their findings to the class. Encourage groups to use various media resources in their presentations whenever possible. It may also be interesting for the groups to re-enact a portion (or portions) of the case.
