Summary

Duration
2 – 3 lessons
Purpose
To express feelings through art

Before Exploring
Ask students to discuss in small groups their feelings when some event in the news moves them. Have them talk about those times on the news that they have seen men and women lying in state with thousands of people paying their last respects. What emotions do they have? How do they express those emotions?
Outline the Opportunity
Have students listen to clip 11 on Dief the Chief on the CBC Radio and Television Archives Web site. Ask them to respond to the clip as if they were a Canadian citizen at the time. How might they have felt? Why did so many, including adversaries, pay their respects in this way?
Follow by asking them to sketch or paint a picture that shows the personal response they imagine.
