Purpose

Before Exploring
Ask students to bring into class any uplifting songs that tell about people. Students can play their selections quietly in groups and then discuss their feelings about the people who are the subject of the songs.
Outline the Opportunity
Have students listen to the clip #10 on Dief the Chief on the CBC Radio and Television Archives Web site. Ask them to select the positive thoughts from this song and compare these to the songs they have brought into class. Follow by asking them to reflect on their feelings once they had listened to the song in the clip.
Students select any person that they respect and write a poem or song about that person.

Revisit and Reflect
Invite students to share their work with the class. What traits did others learn about this person? What opinion do the listeners have about the person in the song?
Extension
Students can record their songs and create a class compilation to share with guests, parents, or another class at school.
