Summary
In this introductory activity students list qualities of a good Prime Minister and compare the accomplishments and failures of John Diefenbaker to that list.
Duration

Purpose
To learn about the accomplishments of Prime Minister John Diefenbaker

Before Exploring
In class, discuss the qualities students would like to see in a Prime Minister. List these qualities for later use in the activity.
Outline the Opportunity
Have small groups of students scan through the clips on Dief the Chief on the CBC Radio and Television Archives. Ask them to pay particular attention to clips 5, 6, 7, 8, and 12.
Using their information, students create a t-chart listing Deifenbaker’s positive accomplishments on one side and failures on the other.
Revisit and Reflect
Ask groups to compare their charts to the initial list of priministerial qualities and decide how effective John Diefenbaker was as a Prime Minister. Share these results as a class and come to a consensus about his rating as a Prime Minister.
Extension
Students can search the Internet and other sources to examine further aspects of John Diefenbaker’s Prime Ministership. They can write a persuasive essay to explain their opinion on his term in this office.
