Summary
In this introductory activity, students create a timeline of significant events in the Canadian film industry.
Duration
1 lesson
Purpose
To understand key events in the history of Canadian film
Lesson Plan
Before Exploring
Ask students what Canadian films they have seen and how they know that the films were Canadian. Invite a brief discussion about their enjoyment of the films.
Outline the Opportunity
Direct students to the topic Bright Lights, Political Fights: The Canadian Film Industry on the CBC Radio and Television Archives Web site. As students explore the topic with a partner, have them complete a copy of the download sheet Canadian Cinema Timeline. Students’ timelines should include a description of the events and a summary of the significance of those events. Students will find most of the information they need in the sections The Story and Did You Know?
Revisit and Reflect
Have students share their timelines. Using the information, create a class timeline. Have students focus on the timeline and observe any patterns.
Extension
Students can re-group to view the additional clip “A History of Canadian Cinema.” Groups should note how the Canadian film industry has grown. Have them explain how this clip has added to their understanding of the history of Canadian film. Have each group share and discuss its response with the class.
