Disabled but Not Defeated
Project type: Assignment
Subjects
English Language Arts
Summary
Students research the goals of the Man in Motion World Tour and learn whether they were met, in spite of major obstacles.
Duration
2 lessons
Purpose
Find evidence to show how Rick Hansen met his goals
Lesson Plan
Before Exploring
Ask students what particular challenges disabled people face in meeting their daily needs. As a class, browse the topic Rick Hansen: Man in Motion on the CBC Radio and Television Archives Web site and view Clip #2. After viewing, ask students what three goals Rick Hansen set for himself at the outset of the Man in Motion World Tour. Record the three goals on the board. Ask students to name obstacles they think someone would face in reaching those goals and what additional obstacles Rick Hansen would have faced.
Outline the Opportunity
Provide students with a copy of the download sheet Disabled but Not Defeated. Ask them to record the three goals as written on the board.

Have students visit the topic Rick Hansen: Man in Motion on the CBC Radio and Television Archives Web site and view Clips #3, 9, 10,11. As they explore the site, they should find and record evidence that Rick Hansen met the goals he set for the Man in Motion World Tour and note the major obstacles he faced while trying to achieve those goals.

Revisit and Reflect
As a class, discuss the information the students have recorded on their charts. Ask the following questions:
  1. To what extent did Rick Hansen meet each of his three goals?
  2. What were the major obstacles he faced and how was each overcome?
Extension
Have students respond to the statement by Bill Cameron that Hansen’s “determination and drive is legendary.”
