Summary
Using a variety of Web-based resources, students will research and compare hydroelectric power with alternate sources of energy.
Duration
2 lessons
Purpose
To explore viable alternatives to hydroelectric power

Before Exploring
The gap between energy supply and our appetite for electricity is widening. At the same time, conventional power sources, such as oil, are running out or causing environmental damage and the search for “clean” power has become critical. But economic pressures have forced governments to rethink their decisions to close coal-fired plants, nuclear reactors, and other technologies that can have troubling environmental costs. The race is on to find reasonably priced, environmentally friendly sources of electricity.
Outline the Opportunity
Students will work alone or in pairs to research and compare hydroelectric power with an alternate source of energy. They will summarize their findings on a chart and prepare and deliver a visual presentation.
Revisit and Reflect
Students can write a proposal in support of a power source that best suits their region of the country.
