Post a three-column KWL chart (Know, Want to Know, Learned) and then lead the class in a discussion about the concept of species at risk. Ask: What do you know about endangered species in Canada? What do you want to know? Write the students’ answers in the first two columns of the chart.

Direct students to the Government of Canada Web site http://www.speciesatrisk.gc.ca/default_e.cfm. As they explore the site, have them answer the following questions:

1. Define the term “species at risk.”
2. Name several species at risk in Canada.
3. List factors that endanger species.

Divide the class into pairs. Direct students to the topic Endangered Species in Canada on the CBC Radio and Television Archives Web site and have them view Clip #2. Tell them to answer the following “W” questions on the download sheet “Species at Risk”, keeping in mind the background information they have already gathered:

What does Monte Hummel suggest is the main reason species are becoming endangered?

What can people do to protect endangered species?

Why is it important for a Canadian to be concerned about endangering species such as the skink, mollusk, and slug?

Why is it important to preserve wild plant species?

Invite students to share what they have learned. Record their observations in the “L” column of the KWL chart.

Students may select one Canadian species at risk and present what they know about it in a song or poem. They can perform their pieces in class or on tape to celebrate Earth Day or another occasion related to protecting the environment.
