Summary
Students will prepare a simulated documentary connecting Dr. Norman Bethune’s life to significant historical events and developments of the 20th century.
Duration
2 lessons
Purpose
To explore the link between a historical figure and historical events
Lesson Plan
Before Exploring
Ask students to give examples of important historical events that took place during World War I, the 1920s, the 1930s, and the 1970s. Ask them to explain the impact of these world events on Canada. Record the examples on the board.

If students have not done the introductory activity, ask them what they know of Dr. Norman Bethune and his historical importance in Canada and the world. What events can they name that are associated with Bethune?

Then ask students what they know about the following events: Canada’s participation in World War I, access to medical care in Canada in the 1920s and 1930s, the Spanish Civil War, the Sino-Japanese War, and Canada’s relations with China during the 1970s.

Outline the Opportunity
Direct students to the topic “Comrade” Bethune: A Controversial Hero on the CBC Radio and Television Archives Web site. Divide the class into groups. Each group will focus on one of the following periods of the 20thcentury: World War I, the 1920s, the 1930s, and the 1970s. Have them view Clips # 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, and 9. If they wish, students can take notes on the download sheet Bethune and the Twentieth Century.

As they explore the clips, students will gather information about Bethune’s role in Canadian and world events and what has been done to recognize his contributions. Each group will prepare a segment of a simulated television documentary entitled “Dr. Norman Bethune and the Twentieth Century.” The focus will be on the following episodes: World War I (Clip #1), health care and social conditions in Canada during the 1920s (Clips #1 and #2), the Spanish Civil War (Clip #3), Bethune in China (Clip #4), and Bethune’s recognition as an important historical figure (Clip #5).

The report can be a “you are there” dramatization of an event, an interview with an important historical figure, or a role-play involving Bethune and other people who were involved in the event.

Revisit and Reflect
Have each group present its segment to the rest of the class. Once the reports are finished, ask students to evaluate what they have learned about Dr. Norman Bethune and about important events in 20th century Canadian and world history. Record their observations on the board.
Extension
Students can prepare and present a response to the question: Is Dr. Norman Bethune a Canadian Hero? They should cite examples from the group documentary to support their views.
