Summary
Students discuss the approach of the Ontario government to continue the recreational fishing industry in the Grassy Narrows region and create an advertising campaign that they feel shares the necessary information with fishers in the region.
Duration
1 to 2 lessons
Purpose
To evaluate the actions of a provincial government on a major environmental issue

Before Exploring
Ask students to clip and bring to class several ads from a local newspaper. In small groups have them examine the contents of the ads and identify those that seem to exaggerate the product or appear to hide something about it.
Outline the Opportunity
Direct students to Mercury Rising: The Poisoning of Grassy Narrows on the CBC Radio and Television Archives Web site and have them watch Clip #5. Ask students to gather in small groups and discuss how the Ontario Government might have responded differently to the plight of the Grassy Narrows Ojibwa. Students then work in pairs to create an advertising campaign that warns potential fishers and guides about the mercury contamination of the English-Wabigoon River system.
Revisit and Reflect
Have students present their campaigns to the class. Discuss which of these best addresses the issue of protecting guides and tourists and why.
Extension
Students can write a persuasive paragraph or essay reacting to the response given by the Ontario government to the plight of the Grassy Narrows people.
