Duration
2 lessons
Purpose
To identify both sides of an argument
Lesson Plan
Before Exploring
Use an LCD projector or have students sit at individual computers to view Clip #3 from the topic Hippie Society: The Youth Rebellion on the CBC Radio and Television Archives Web site. Ask: How do you feel about the hippie movement? How do you think the authorities of the time felt?
Outline the Opportunity
Direct students to the topic Hippie Society: The Youth Rebellion on the CBC Radio and Television Archives Web site. In pairs, students will review the following clips and take notes on important facts and information: Clips #4, 5, and 9, and the Additional Clips “Hippies hold ‘chair-in’ at Toronto City Council,” “Police break up Yorkville sit-in,” “Reaction to the Yorkville sit-in, ” “ Police raid on Montreal coffeehouse,” and “Can they see eye to eye?: Cops talk about hippies.” Remind students to read the Did You Know? section for each clip.

Students will create a T-chart comparing the views of the hippies with those of the authorities.

Revisit and Reflect
Have groups of three pairs get together to discuss their findings. Then, as a class, create a master T-chart outlining the major philosophical differences between the hippies and the authorities.
Extension
Students can role-play a confrontation between a small group of hippies and an authority figure. Remind them to show respect for the views of both groups and to share their arguments respectfully.
