Summary
Students research and role-play an interview with a key figure involved in the seal hunt debate.
Duration
2 lessons
Purpose
To generate relevant questions, to demonstrate understanding of the challenges associated with sustaining resources

Before Exploring
Explain to students that issues like the seal hunt often get more extensive media coverage when there are well-known people and celebrities connected to the stories. Ask students if they can think of issues to which celebrities are connected, such as Michael J. Fox and Parkinson's disease or Terry Fox raising funds for cancer research.
Outline the Opportunity
Direct students to the topic Pelts, Pups and Protest: The Atlantic Seal Hunt on the CBC Radio and Television Archives Web site. Students will browse the topic and list the politicians, actors, artists, and other advocates they find who have voiced their support or opposition to the seal hunt. Students can use the download sheet Who's Who in the Seal Hunt Debate to record their notes.
In pairs, students will select one person from their list. Pairs will prepare a list of questions and responses for a role-play interview in the format of their choice. They will then present their interview.
Revisit and Reflect
Following presentation of the role-plays, have a class discussion to debrief. Ask: Which, if any, of the personalities made a strong impression on you? Why? Do you think these people had any real impact on the seal hunt? How?
Extension
Pairs can select a person from their list who supports the other side of the seal hunt debate and create new interview questions. How does preparing questions for the other side of the debate change the questions they ask?
