To explore the seal hunt in Atlantic Canada
Lesson Plan
Before Exploring
Write the phrase “seal hunt” on the board or chart paper. Ask students to brainstorm what they know about this topic and list their responses. Ask: Might your responses be different if you lived in a different part of the country? Why?
Outline the Opportunity
Direct students to the topic Pelts, Pups and Protest: The Atlantic Seal Hunt on the CBC Radio and Television Archives Web site. Divide the class into groups and assign each group one set of the following clips:
  • Clips #1 and 11
  • Clips #2 and 6
  • Clips #3 and 4
  • Clips #5 and 10
  • Clips #7 and 8
  • Clips #8, 9, 10, and 11
Students should include the Did You Know? sections in their review. Students will note important facts and information, and can use the download sheet Exploring the Atlantic Seal Hunt to record their findings.

Each group will prepare a presentation to share their findings. Students can use chart paper, the board, posters, flow charts, presentation software, role-plays, and so on to convey what they learned.

  • Revisit and Reflect
Have groups share their presentations with the class. Students should be prepared to ask and answer questions. Ask: Have you developed strong feelings about the hunt? Explain. Do you have any questions about the seal hunt? List their questions on the board or chart paper as a reference for other activities about this topic.
    Extension
Students can create and display a fact sheet about the seal hunt.
