Summary
Students will develop and role-play a mock interview with Jean Chrétien, focused on one of the challenges he faced during his early political career.
Duration
2 lessons
Purpose
To understand political challenges and the complexities of possible solutions

Before Exploring
Brainstorm national and international issues that appear challenging for our political leaders, such as global warming, the Kyoto Accord, national defence budget, equalization, regional disparities, and the war on terrorism. Select one issue and invite students to suggest possible ways to address the issue. Note the various possible solutions and ask: Why is being prime minister such a complex and difficult job?
Outline the Opportunity
Direct students to the topic Jean Chrétien: From Pool Hall to Parliament Hill on the CBC Radio and Television Archives Web site. Students will work in pairs to thoroughly review the site and then select one of the following challenges Jean Chrétien experienced during his early career in politics:
Quebec referenda
Constitutional debates
Liberal leadership races
First Nations issues
Students may also select a different topic from Chrétien’s political career before 1986. Provide students with the download sheet A Legacy of Leadership to record their notes. Students may wish to expand their research to other topics on the CBC Archives site or other relevant, online resources.
From their research, pairs will develop a script for an interview with Chrétien about their selected topic. The interview script should include both questions and plausible responses. Provide students time to practise their role-play, with one student acting as interviewer and the other acting as Chrétien.
Revisit and Reflect
Invite pairs to present their role-plays. Discuss the topics, questions, or responses that had an impact on the students. Ask: Do you think Chrétien handled these issues well? Why or why not?
Extension
Students can write to Chrétien and pose the questions they prepared for the mock interview. Students may wish to include their own opinions about their chosen topic.
