Summary
In this introductory activity, students create a timeline of Air Canada’s history.
Duration
1 to 2 lessons
Purpose
To gain an understanding of key events in the history of Air Canada

Before Exploring
Brainstorm with students what they already know about Air Canada. Discuss what they have heard about it in the news lately.
Outline the Opportunity
Direct students to the topic Turbulent Skies: The Air Canada Story on the CBC Radio and Television Archives Web site. As students explore the topic in small groups, have each student complete a copy of the download sheet Air Canada Timeline. Students’ timelines should include a description of the events and a summary of the significance of those events. Students will find most of the information they need in the sections The Story and Did You Know?
Revisit and Reflect
Have students share their timelines. Using their information create a class timeline. Have students focus on the timeline and answer the question: What events do you think led to Air Canada’s present difficulties? Why?
Extension
Students can re-group to discuss what they think are the three most significant dates in the timeline. Have each group write a summary of its response to share and discuss with the class.
