Summary
In this introductory activity, students browse the site to gather impressions of and information about René Lévesque.
Duration
1 lesson
Purpose
To gather information from online resources about the character and personality of a political figure

Before Exploring
Give students about five minutes to sit with a member of the class they do not know well. Have them get enough information so that they can briefly introduce the person to the rest of the class. Have a few students make brief introductions of their new acquaintances and note on the board or chart paper the types of information the students provide.
Outline the Opportunity
Direct students to the topic René Lévesque’s Separatist Fight on the CBC Radio and Television Archives Web site. Students will browse the site for about 30 minutes to gather a quick impression of René Lévesque so that they can present him to the class. Students should make brief notes as they browse the topic.
Revisit and Reflect
As a class, have students make brief comments about who Lévesque was. Clear up any confusion or misconceptions. Ask students if they have any questions about Lévesque. Ask: What further information would you like about him? Do you like him? Why or why not? What had you heard about him before reviewing the file?
Extension
After the class discussion, students can use their notes and information from the class to write in their journals a one-page profile of Lévesque. Students may go back to the site for further information.
