An Introduction to Politics in Ontario
Project type: Introductory Activity
Subjects
History
Political Science
Summary
In this introductory activity, students will explore the main personalities, events, and issues in Ontario politics from the mid-1980s to the present day.
Duration
1 lesson
Purpose
To gain some initial impressions and information about recent political events in Ontario
Lesson Plan
Before Exploring
Brainstorm what students know about politics in Ontario. Identify the current premier, the party in power, and the main opposition parties and their leaders. Ask: Why is Ontario such an important province in Canada? Why are people in other parts of Canada concerned about political developments in Ontario?
Outline the Opportunity
Direct students to the topic Ontario Elections: Twenty Tumultuous Years on the CBC Radio and Television Archives Web site. As they explore the topic, students will compile a list of the most important elections and personalities in Ontario from 1985 to the present day. In groups, students will then share their information and impressions about Ontario politics and will prepare a short report on what they learned.
Revisit and Reflect
Have each group present its report, identifying the key events and participants in Ontario politics from 1985 to today. Discuss the following statement: After decades of stability, the political scene in Ontario has been tumultuous and unpredictable since the mid-1980s.
Extension
Students can reflect in their journals about why Ontario politics has been so tumultuous in the past 20 years.
