Provide students with the download sheet Canada’s Forgotten Heroes. Students will work in pairs to complete sections A and B, entering their thoughts about the following:

1. What key words describe a hero?
2. Name three or four people you consider a hero.
3. Identify the act(s) of heroism performed by each hero.
4. List the ways that society or the public has recognized the heroes for their act(s) of heroism.

Direct students to the topic Forgotten Heroes: Canada and the Korean War on the CBC Radio and Television Archives Web site. In groups of four, students will browse the clips for 10 to 15 minutes in any order they wish. Students will use section C of the download sheet to compare the actions and characteristics of the heroes they already listed with the actions and characteristics they find while they browse. Each group will write to summarize what they discovered about Korean War veterans.

Have each group present its summary, then lead a class discussion on the students’ observations and feelings. Ask: How has Canada recognized the efforts and sacrifices of our Korean War veterans? How should our society recognize war veterans? Discuss students’ responses in light of their findings.

Students can create a poster to recognize the Korean War veterans. Students can submit their posters to the Government of Canada for the annual observances of Remembrance Day on November 11.
