Before Exploring
Ask: How are forest fires caused? Record students’ responses on the board or chart paper. In pairs, students will classify each recorded answer under the headings of Natural Causes and Human Causes. Verify their classification.
Ask: How can forest fires be prevented? How did you personally gain this knowledge about preventing forest fires?
Outline the Opportunity
Have students explore Clip #2 on the topic Fighting Forest Fires on the CBC Radio and Television Archives Web site, and the Additional Clip “’Litter Picking Pete’ symbolizes good outdoor manners.”
Students will work in groups to create and name a mascot whose purpose is to inform young children about how to prevent forest fires. Students will create a presentation in a medium of their choice (poster, cartoon, commercial, and so on) to present their character and its message to the world.
Revisit and Reflect
Have each group present its mascot to the class and explain how the mascot will encourage young children to help to prevent forest fires.
Extension
Students can visit primary grade classes to present their mascot and its message. Encourage students to take questions and comments from the class so they can refine and improve their creation.
