Purpose
To introduce students to the life and work of Mordecai Richler

Before Exploring
Ask students to share with the class what they already know about Canadian author Mordecai Richler. This may include knowledge of his children’s books or possibly his novels, articles, and essays.
Model for students the process of choosing the most important sentence from a media clip by selecting one of the Additional Clips on the Richler topic. Play the clip once and select your sentence. Summarize for the students why you chose this sentence, then play it again to demonstrate how you chose and to verify your choice. With the class, paraphrase the sentence.
Outline the Opportunity
Direct students to the topic Mordecai Richler Was Here on the CBC Radio and Television Archives Web site. Assign pairs of students one clip each from the following: Clip #2, 4, 5, 7, 9, 11, and 12. Pairs will view their clip and discuss and record what they believe to be the most important sentence in their clip. They may need to view the clip a second and third time. Pairs will then paraphrase the sentence they chose.
Revisit and Reflect
Ask each group to share their paraphrased sentence and explain why they made that choice, while you write the sentences on the board or chart paper. With the class, summarize what you’ve learned about Richler.
Extension
To explore additional works by Richler, students can locate essays or articles by him and share with the class what they believe to be the most important points.
