Summary
In this introductory activity, students will explore Matthew Halton’s reflections on Canada and identify and express their own views on what Canada means to them.
Duration

Purpose
To understand our connections to Canada and other Canadians
Before Exploring
Ask students about their experiences travelling through Canada. This can include travelling to parts of their own city or town or travelling to other cities, provinces, or territories. Students should consider both physical geography and their experiences with other Canadians.
Outline the Opportunity
Direct students to the Additional Clip “Matthew Halton speaks about Canada” on the topic Reports from Abroad: Matthew Halton on the CBC Radio and Television Archives Web site. As they listen, students should list three things Halton said that still apply to Canada and three things that no longer apply.
Revisit and Reflect
Brainstorm with the class what being Canadian meant to Halton and write responses on the board or chart paper. Ask students to offer points from their lists about what being Canadian still means and create a master list with the class. Ask: What have we lost as Canadians since the time of Halton’s radio broadcast?
Extension
Students can use their journal to write a personal definition of what it means to be Canadian. Students should focus on what being a Canadian is, rather than what it’s not.
