Before Exploring
Have students brainstorm what they know about the Industrial Revolution. Write their responses on the board or chart paper. Ask: How have machines helped to create the modern, industrial world? What effect have they had on the types of jobs people do? Identify job creation and job loss, changing population centres, and the modern workday.
Outline the Opportunity
Divide the class into two groups. One group will focus on the positive aspects of computer technology and the other will focus on the negative aspects. On the topic Computer Invasion: A History of Automation in Canada on the CBC Radio and Television Archives Web site, have students thoroughly review Clips #4, 6, 7, and 9 and the Additional Clips “Robot takeover threatens job economy” and “David Suzuki discusses computer revolution.” Students will take notes as they view to prepare for a debate defending their assigned position.
After viewing, groups will get together, compare notes, select the most persuasive arguments, select two or three debaters to present their side, and create an organized presentation. Debaters can use visuals, such as charts, graphics, and diagrams.
Revisit and Reflect
Have the debaters present their group’s arguments. Then open the floor to the rest of the class so that the debaters can defend their views. Students will then write a brief summary on the net effect of computerization on the workplace, which can include their personal opinions.
Extension
Students can compare and contrast life in the workplace today to life in the workplace during the Industrial Revolution. Students may use either a T-chart or essay format.
