Lesson Plan
Before Exploring
Write the phrase “inbred love of a province” on the board. Ask:
  • What do you think this phrase means?
  • What does it mean to you personally?
  • Explain how you feel about your province.
  • What changes do you think would be good for your province? Why?
  • What would you be willing to do to make those changes happen?
  • Outline the Opportunity
Assign half of the class Clips #3 and #4 on the topic The “Other Revolution”: Louis Robichaud’s New Brunswick on the CBC Radio and Television Archives Web site. The other half of the class will view Clip #11. As they view, students will need to take notes about the development of industry in New Brunswick under Louis Robichaud, the influence of Kenneth C. Irving on that development, and the relationship of the two men who both had an inbred love of the province. Students should also make notes about language differences, racial divisions, economic challenges, prejudices, and power struggles in New Brunswick.

For additional biographical information about Robichaud, students can visit http://www.gnb.ca/legis/publications/tradition/premiers/robichaudl-e.asp. For biographical details on Irving, students can visit http://collections.ic.gc.ca/heirloom_series/volume4/174-177.htm.

In small groups, students will share and discuss what they discovered about New Brunswick, Louis Robichaud, and Kenneth C. Irving.

    Revisit and Reflect
Assign each group the following questions for discussion and response.
    1. How were Robichaud and Irving similar in their vision for the transformation of New Brunswick?
    2. How were Robichaud and Irving different in their approaches to the development of New Brunswick?
    3. How did Irving and Robichaud share their views and opinions with the public?
    4. What was the public’s opinion of Robichaud and Irving?

Have each group share its responses with the class through a class discussion.

    Extension
Students can write a speech for Louis Robichaud or a press release from the Irving Corporation that demonstrates their commitment to the progress and development of New Brunswick.
