Summary
In this introductory activity, students will learn about the Acadians and their role in New Brunswick’s history.
Duration
1 to 2 lessons
Purpose
To identify the causes and results of the expulsion and exile of the Acadians

Before Exploring
Write “New Brunswick” on the board or chart paper. Have students brainstorm what they know about the province and its history. If not offered by the students, identify Acadians and Louis Robichaud.
Outline the Opportunity
In small groups, have students review Clips #1, 2, and 9 on the topic The “Other Revolution”: Louis Robichaud’s New Brunswick on the CBC Radio and Television Archives Web site. Students should also view the Did You Know? section for each clip. As they browse, groups will complete a chart to record the following:
- Causes of the exile
- Results of the exile
- Remaining questions
Revisit and Reflect
Have groups volunteer information from their charts and record it on a class chart. Post the class chart in a visible location for reference during the remainder of the lessons on this topic. Add to the chart as students offer information not already included.
Extension
Students can create a timeline of the key historical events from the early 1600s to the present to illustrate the history of the Acadians. Interested students can use the Additional Clips on the topic to complete their timeline.
