Summary
Students will examine the role of Canada’s military and debate whether it is large enough to perform its role well.
Duration
1 lesson
Purpose
To explore the value and purpose of Canada’s military

Before Exploring
Ask: What role does the Canadian military play in the world today? Brainstorm examples of both warlike and peaceful deployments.
Outline the Opportunity
Guide students to Clip #10 on the topic Red River Rising: Manitoba Floods on the CBC Radio and Television Archives Web site. After viewing, students will work in small groups to discuss whether Canada’s military is large enough to perform all of its roles adequately.
Pose the resolution: Canada’s military is not large enough to perform all of its roles adequately. Pair two groups and assign one to the pro and one to the con side of the resolution. Give students some more time to review the Web site and to gather information on their position. Have each pair of groups debate the resolution for the class.
Revisit and Reflect
After each debate, students will choose a winner and explain why they felt the arguments were more compelling. After several debates, discuss as a class whether one side is winning more often than the other, and why they think that is so.
Extension
Invite a member of the military to visit the class and discuss the various roles that military personnel play in Canada, and around the world, today.
