An Investigation of the Effects of Marijuana and Alcohol
Project type: Web Quest
Subjects
Science
Physical Education
Summary
Using a variety of Web-based resources, students will research and prepare a presentation on the physical, psychological, and social effects of alcohol and of marijuana on the people who use them.
Duration
1 to 2 lessons
Purpose
To investigate and compare the physical, psychological, and social effects of marijuana and alcohol
Lesson Plan
Before Exploring
The physical, psychological, and social effects of alcohol on its users have been well researched and well documented. There are similar studies, although not as many, on the effects of marijuana. The effect of marijuana is one of the issues raised around the drug’s legalization.
Outline the Opportunity
Students will prepare a creative presentation to illustrate, compare, and contrast the physical, psychological, and social effects of alcohol and of marijuana on people who use the substances.

Students can begin their research by viewing the clip “Comparing marijuana and alcohol: a demonstration” under Additional Clips on the topic Pot and Politics: Canada and the Marijuana Debate on the CBC Radio and Television Archives Web site.

Revisit and Reflect
Have each group deliver its presentation to the class. Students should be prepared to ask and answer questions and discuss the information in their classmates’ presentations. Ask: Which presentations were most effective and why? How does the information in the presentations compare? Why might one presentation include information that another does not?

Encourage discussion about the effect of various presentations and what impact they might have on different audiences. Ask: Which presentations would be effective for preventing young children from using marijuana or alcohol? Which presentations would be effective for stopping current users? Which presentation would best support those seeking to legalize marijuana?
