Summary
Using a variety of Web-based resources, students will research and prepare a presentation on the effects of the Montreal Massacre and the societal changes that have resulted, then share their presentations as part of a classroom symposium.
Duration
2 to 3 lessons
Purpose
To examine the effects and resulting societal changes of a traumatic event
Lesson Plan
Before Exploring
On December 6, 1989, a gunman killed 14 women at a Montreal university. The only reason for the targets he chose was gender.

If students have not completed other activities about the Montreal Massacre, they can browse the Montreal Massacre topic on the CBC Radio and Television Archives Web site and take notes about the issues highlighted, specifically violence against women and gun control.

Outline the Opportunity
In groups of five to six, students will create a symposium based on the effects of the Montreal Massacre. Topics might include gun control, the White Ribbon campaign, Canada’s National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women, and Montreal Massacre memorials. Have students choose a topic and decide how they will report on it. Then have them begin their research on the Montreal Massacre topic on the CBC Radio and Television Archives Web site. They may also use any other relevant resources.
Revisit and Reflect
Pair groups and have them present to one another, asking questions and discussing their ideas in depth. Each pair of groups should present to the class a summary statement of what its members think is the key impact of the massacre on Canadian society.
