Summary
Students will list the pros and cons of maintaining campus traditions that are considered sexist, then debate their arguments.
Duration
2 lessons
Purpose
To organize arguments logically and thoughtfully, to support an opinion orally
Lesson Plan
Before Exploring
Write the word “sexism” on the board and ask students what they think it means. Then ask them to define an action they think is sexist and explain why. As a group, confirm a definition of the term sexism.
Outline the Opportunity
Have students view Clip #5 on the Montreal Massacre topic on the CBC Radio and Television Archives Web site. Have them review their class definition of sexism. Ask: Is the Lady Godiva ride sexist? Why? What impact has the Montreal Massacre had on the tradition of the Lady Godiva ride?

Then have students choose working groups of three. Each group should prepare a T-chart to list the pros and cons of continuing the Lady Godiva ride. Using their completed charts, groups will summarize and evaluate the points they made and include supporting details for each. Each group should try to arrive at a consensus on the question.

Revisit and Reflect
Have all students share their results with the class either in an informal discussion or through a formal debate. Again, attempt to arrive at a class consensus on the question. Ask students to consider and explain the usefulness of the T-chart in helping them to make a decision about a controversial issue.
Extension
Students can write a personal, reflective essay that analyzes their reactions to the continuation of the tradition of the Lady Godiva ride. Ask students to consider whether their views of sexism and feminism have changed.
