To use necessary conventions to write a news article, to compare print and broadcast versions of a news story

Before Exploring
Bring to class several recent news articles from a newspaper. Have students identify the structure of the articles and the way people usually read news articles (headline, lead, then scan the rest of the article). Then ask how the way we read a news article is reflected in the format (the head is easy to read and sums up information quickly, most important information is given in the lead, the lead usually includes answers to the 5 Ws and H). Emphasize that a news article is usually organized from the most to the least important points.
Outline the Opportunity
Direct students to the Montreal Massacre topic on the CBC Radio and Television Archives Web site. Have them view Clip #1, and note the information and quotations in the clip. Then ask students to turn the information they have gathered into a news article for a newspaper with a serious tone. Their article should be written to cover the event just after it happened. Students should view the clip several times, then choose the most important point, followed by other key information in descending order of importance. Articles should include a headline and a lead that answers the 5 Ws and H. Students can have a peer edit their draft, then complete a good copy of their article.
Revisit and Reflect
Students will submit their complete writing package (notes, draft, and good copy). Ask several students to read their articles aloud. As a class, discuss the differences between broadcast and print media. Which do they think is more effective in sharing the story of an event such as the Montreal Massacre? Why? What are the strengths and weaknesses of each format?
Extension
Students can investigate the elements of a feature article in a newspaper or magazine. They can then do research and write a feature article that addresses the issue of violence against women.
