Summary
In this introductory activity, students write a personal response to information they learn about the Montreal Massacre.
Duration
1 lesson
Purpose
To find and respond to information
Lesson Plan
Before Exploring
Ask students to explain what the word “massacre” means to them and if they can name any massacres. If a student identifies the Montreal Massacre, ask for a summary of what happened. Otherwise, ask students if they have heard of it, and, if so, what they already know about it.
Outline the Opportunity
In their journals, students will write the statement “I was surprised to discover…”

Have students browse the topic The Montreal Massacre on the CBC Radio and Television Archives Web site for 30 minutes. As they browse, they will take point-form notes to complete the statement they have written. When the time is up, students will share their responses. Encourage different responses, clarifying questions, active listening, and responding in turn to each other’s comments.

Revisit and Reflect
As a class, discuss the information students found and what significance it has for their lives. List on the board or on chart paper any questions that students have about the Montreal Massacre that they would like to explore through the use of the CBC Radio and Television Archives Web site. They can do further research now, as an extension activity, or by completing other activities about the topic.
Extension
Encourage students to discuss with their families what they learned about the Montreal Massacre and write a summary of their reactions to this act of violence against women.
