Before Exploring
If students have done the activity St. Lawrence Seaway Timeline, review their work as a class. If they have not done the activity, they can do it now. Alternatively, have students browse the topic The St. Lawrence Seaway: Gateway to the World on the CBC Radio and Television Archives Web site for 30 minutes and list any issues they think are important in the history of the Seaway project.
Outline the Opportunity
Divide the class into groups of three or four. Present the following topics:
Science and technology
Human impact
Economics and business
Politics
Environmental issues
Have each group choose a theme, then have them go to the topic The St. Lawrence Seaway: Gateway to the World on the CBC Radio and Television Archives Web site. Group members will divide the viewing of the clips and take notes, then share their information with their group. Together, each group will complete a visual presentation about its topic.
Revisit and Reflect
Have groups share their presentations. Ask students to describe something they learned from another presentation and how they think that information relates to their own.
Extension
After the presentation of all topics, have students compose a short essay on whether the Seaway was worth constructing. Their closing paragraph should include their thoughts on the future of the Seaway.
