Duration
2 to 3 lessons
Purpose
To share information visually
Lesson Plan
Before Exploring
Post a map of Canada on the wall. Ask students to identify the location of the Seaway. Then, as a class, brainstorm industries in Canada. Have students show the location of each industry on the map.
Outline the Opportunity
Have students work in groups of three or four. Give each group a copy of a map of Canada and explain that they will be creating a detailed map that shows the Seaway and the industries and markets it connects. Direct students to the topic The St. Lawrence Seaway: Gateway to the World on the CBC Radio and Television Archives Web site. Students in each group should divide the work of viewing the clips among themselves. Students will make notes on their map as they view, then gather with their groups to share information. Using all of the information gathered, groups will complete their final map. It should include the location of the Seaway, the location of major industries in Canada and the location of major markets for those industries in Canada, as well as an indication of links among those industries and markets. Students can add visuals or written explanations to their maps.
Revisit and Reflect
Have each group share its work with the class. Students should be prepared to ask and answer questions and use any information they gather to revise their own maps if they wish. Ask each group to make one statement about the importance of the Seaway to Canada.
Extension
Students can create a set of before and after maps that show the change in geography in the Seaway area. Their maps should include information about each town that disappeared as a result of the Seaway.
