Lesson Plan
Before Exploring
Show students a map of Canada. Outline the location of the St. Lawrence Seaway. Ask: What makes the St. Lawrence Seaway so important to Canada? List student responses on the chalkboard. Encourage students to think about some of Canada’s natural resources, such as iron and grain, and where the markets for these resources lie.
Outline the Opportunity
Direct students to the topic The St. Lawrence Seaway: Gateway to the World on the CBC Radio and Television Archives Web site. Ask students to browse for 20 to 30 minutes. As they view, they should note the events in the pre-building and building phases of the Seaway, as well as current events related to it. Using their notes, students will create a timeline of the major events they noted.
Revisit and Reflect
Have students share their timelines. Compare the way different students clustered the events. Why was the Seaway problematic to build? Why was it successful? What factors have led to troubles today? What might the future hold?
Extension
Students can write an essay on the future of the Seaway.
