In groups, students explore specific questions about the impact of the Confederation Bridge and present their findings in the form of a computer-based slide show presentation.
Duration
3 to 4 lessons
Purpose
To analyze the economic, social, and technological impact of the Confederation Bridge
Lesson Plan
Before Exploring
Much debate surrounded the cancellation of ferry service between New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island and the construction of a “fixed link” between PEI and the mainland. Eventually, though, the Confederation Bridge was built and has had an impact on the communities it serves.
Outline the Opportunity
Present students with the following scenario: You and your co-workers are part of a consulting team with an internationally based company. Five years after the official opening of the Confederation Bridge in PEI, your team has been sent to the island to conduct a study and prepare a report for a foreign government that is considering building a bridge similar in design to the Confederation Bridge.

Your report will provide information on the following questions:

  1. Does the Confederation Bridge provide a safe and effective transportation link to the mainland?
  2. Has the construction of the Confederation Bridge enhanced or hindered the economy of PEI? Explain in terms of specific industries.
  3. Has the completion of the Confederation Bridge changed the lifestyle of its residents? What do the residents have to say on this point?
  4. What measures were taken during the construction process to deal with environmental concerns? Have these measures been successful?
  5. What impact has the construction of the Confederation Bridge had on the landscape of the island?
Revisit and Reflect
Each group will present its report to the class (the rest of the consulting team) in preparation to report to the client. Encourage students to ask questions to help clarify any information. You might consider having the entire class present its report to another class or to a group of administrators.
