Purpose
To gather facts about a person
Lesson Plan
Before Exploring
Review and discuss what students already know about Dr. David Suzuki. Give each student the Know/Wonder/Learned chart on the download sheet David Suzuki: Just the Facts. Have students spend five minutes recording in the Know column all of the facts that they can remember about Suzuki. Emphasize that they are recording facts and not opinions.
Outline the Opportunity
Have students visit the topic David Suzuki on the CBC Radio and Television Archives Web site and gather information to fill in the second column in their Know/Wonder/Learned chart. When students finish, they can gather in groups of three, compare information, and revise their own work to fill in any gaps.

The students in each group should scan the Table of Contents of the topic site. Each student should choose different clips and spend 30 minutes viewing them. As they work, students will complet the final column in their chart. They should compare their finished work with their group members and revise their chart accordingly.

Revisit and Reflect
Ask each group to choose a leader and ask the leader to share the group’s findings with the class. Together, review the facts, check for accuracy, and list additional, pertinent information. You may also wish to list on the board or on chart paper any questions that students have about Suzuki and his work that they would like to explore further.
Extension
Students can reflect in their journals about their reaction to the facts they have gathered. They can consider and explain whether they would want Suzuki for a teacher, whether he inspires them, whether they agree with his statements, and so on.
