English Language Arts
Summary
Using a variety of Web-based resources, students will research a women’s issue of personal interest, then prepare and deliver a persuasive speech on the topic.
Duration
2 to 3 lessons
Purpose
To research, prepare, and deliver a persuasive speech on a topic of personal interest
Lesson Plan
Before Exploring
The Royal Commission on the Status of Women responded to many issues that affected women across the country. In this activity, students will have the opportunity to examine, in-depth, an issue of particular interest to them. Consider inviting an activist, politician, or community leader to speak to students about women’s issues.
Outline the Opportunity
Students will listen to Clip 5 on the Royal Commission on the Status of Women topic to hear an eloquent speech about the status of Aboriginal women.

Then, students can either refer to the list of issues they created in the activity What Women Want, or browse the Royal Commission on the Status of Women topic on the CBC Radio and Television Archives Web site to list issues that were the focus of the Commission. Students will choose one issue of interest to them and complete in-depth research. Students will write and present a persuasive speech about the issue they have chosen.

Revisit and Reflect
Have students present their speech to the class. Speakers should be prepared to support their opinions and to answer questions posed by their classmates.
