Summary
Using a variety of Web-based resources, students will find information about, and report on, the type of storm system that led to the Saguenay Flood.
Duration
2 to 3 lessons
Purpose
To investigate weather patterns and assess their impact on natural disasters

Before Exploring
Discuss the components of major storms with the students to identify their level of current knowledge about storms. Allow them, in small groups, to search geographic resources to differentiate among storms, cyclones, and hurricanes.
Outline the Opportunity
Students will explore the topic to discover information about the severity of the storm that led to the Saguenay Flood. They will then complete a Web search to define the meteorological terms listed below, then write a narrative description of the stages of development of a severe thunderstorm with a comma cloud.
Hurricane
Cyclone
Severe thunderstorm
Comma cloud
Synoptic scale
Cyclonic rotation
Revisit and Reflect
Have students share their narratives with the class. Together, students can compare their understanding of the development of a severe thunderstorm with the information available about the storm that caused the Saguenay Floods.
Students may wish to investigate and discuss the tools currently available to predict severe storms, and describe the steps people might take to prepare for such a storm.
