Duration
1 lesson
Purpose
To examine how humans are affected by natural disasters.

Before Exploring
If students have not already created a word web about natural disasters and about Hurrican Hazel, have them complete the activity Hurricane Web. If they have complete the activity, review what they have learned. Ask: How would you feel if you experienced Hurrican Hazel?
Outline the Opportunity
Direct students to review Clip 4, Ernie Smith’s Tragedy .They might wish to review it more than once. Have them record brief point-form notes detailing the central features of the story, then use their notes to write a one-page, personal letter to Ernie Smith. In their letters students should include their reactions to and comments about Ernie’s plight. Students might also offer words of comfort and hope to Ernie and his family.
Revisit and Reflect
Have volunteers share their letters with the entire class. Consider making a bulletin board display. Discuss with students the meaning of the phrase: "the human face of tragedy."
Extension
Students can review a current newspaper to find out about and write a summary of at least one example of a natural and/or human disaster. Students should focus on the human side of these stories.
Have students share their summaries with the class. The class might then consider responding to a current tragedy through fundraising or a clothing, food, or toy drive.
