Summary
Students will plan an advertising campaign and create an advertisement to promote a Canadian food product.
Duration
2 to 3 lessons
Purpose
To design an advertising campaign
Lesson Plan
Before Exploring
Ask students to identify which advertisements they find most effective. Have students explain their choices in terms of the medium (television, radio, print, Internet) as well as the techniques used. Discuss the types of advertising that students find annoying and why.
Outline the Opportunity
Direct students to the topic A Taste of Canada: Our Homegrown Cuisine on the CBC Digital Archives website. Have students form small groups and view the clips Canadian maple syrup, Vive la poutine!, What makes a great butter tart?, Wild about fiddleheads and The unofficial national sugary snack. Ask each group to select a Canadian product/food for which they will create an advertising campaign to promote sales within Canada.

Have each group plan its advertising campaign. Groups need to consider market, media, effective advertising techniques, and their plan for putting the campaign in place. Groups should then prepare their plan and their advertisements and present both to the class.

Revisit and Reflect
After each presentation, discuss as a group what was effective. Consider whether groups chose an effective medium, how effective their ads were, and how well their campaign targeted its market. Which campaigns did students like best? Why?
Extension
Students can create a portfolio or collage of advertisements they think effectively promote Canadian products.
