The Food We Eat
Project type: Assignment
Subjects
Social Studies
Summary
Students will research and vote for a quintessential Canadian food.
Duration
1 to 2 lessons
Purpose
To identify the cuisine that best represents Canadian identity
Lesson Plan
Before Exploring
Ask students to name a food or recipe that they feel is truly Canadian. Discuss student choices. Ask: Is this food more representative of Canada or of a region of Canada?
Outline the Opportunity
Direct students to the topic A Taste of Canada: Our Homegrown Cuisine on the CBC Digital Archives website. Have students form small groups and browse all nine clips in an effort to nominate the quintessential Canadian food. The item they select must best represent Canada’s identity at an international chefs’ conference.

Each group will decide on the criteria it wants to use to make its selection and come to a consensus on its selection.

Revisit and Reflect
Gather students and have each group explain the criteria it used, the food it chose, and the reasons that that food best represents Canada. As a whole class, decide on the criteria to use to make a final decision. Have each student use that criteria to make a choice from all of the choices proposed by each group. Tally the results to determine the quintessential Canadian food.
Extension
Students can prepare the selected food and share it with the class.
