Students will explore how the business of farming is reflected in the local supermarket and in the products we buy.

Purpose
To investigate agriculture-based groceries and their place of origin
Before Exploring
Ask students to think about what products in the grocery store come from farms. Brainstorm a list.
Outline the Opportunity
Direct students to the topic What’s Happening to the Family Farm? on the CBC Digital Archives website. Have students view the clips Ontario's sweet harvest
and Going organic
.
Have students create a chart based on their family’s grocery purchases on any one grocery shopping trip. If possible, they should record where the product came from.
Have students compare their data in small groups, recording similarities and differences.
Assessment Tip
Have students summarize their data in a spreadsheet. Assess their work based on their skill with the software application.
Revisit and Reflect
As a class, discuss the following:
What proportion of farm products they recorded are local? Why?
Why might the proportion of local items vary by season?
Did students include processed or prepared foods in their list? Why or why not? How are the raw materials in prepared or processed foods linked to farms?
Extension
Students can compile the data for the entire class from this activity. Using spreadsheet software, have them create charts or graphs based on their data.
