Duration
2 lessons
Purpose
To assess the impact of Bill 101 on education in Quebec
Lesson Plan
Before Exploring
In order to protect French language and culture, the Quebec government passed Bill 101 in 1977 making French the official language in Quebec. The law had a specific impact on schools in Quebec because it restricted access to English-language instruction.
Outline the Opportunity
Students will assume they work for the government of Quebec. They will create a public information bulletin to be handed out to parents, comparing and explaining the purpose of Bill 101 and the law regarding language of instruction in 1977 and today.
Revisit and Reflect
Gather students to share and discuss the public information bulletins. Students should be able to explain the evolution of Bill 101 with regard to access to English language instruction in Quebec. Students will listen to the explanations and discuss the validity and effectiveness of the bulletins. Have students select the public information they feel would be best suited for distribution to parents in Quebec.
