Before Exploring
This activity is best suited for students from Grades 9-12, especially those who already have some background knowledge of Canadian history. The task will be to research and prepare a report on one aspect of the history of the African-Canadian communities of Nova Scotia, from the time of the Loyalist migrations of the late 18th century to the present day.
Outline the Opportunity
Students will use the Web site and the resources listed below to research, prepare, and present a report, either orally or in written form, dealing with one of the following aspects of the history of the African-Canadian communities of Nova Scotia from the 18th century to the present:
- The Black Loyalist Migration to Nova Scotia
- Slavery in Canada
- Resettlement Projects in Africa
- The Early African-American Settlements
- Major Community Leaders
- African-Canadian Culture in Nova Scotia
- Racism and Discrimination
- Community Organizations
- Africville’s History and Demolition
- Civil Rights Movements in Nova Scotia
- Nova Scotia’s African-Canadian Communities Today
Revisit and Reflect
Reports should be presented to the class. Encourage comparison and discussion of the various communities, the factors that affected their growth and change, the impact of the communities on African-Canadian communities today and on the country as a whole. Reports can be incorporated into a classroom display of materials relating to the history of the African-Canadian communities of Nova Scotia.
