Duration
1 to 2 lessons
Purpose
To analyze the elements that make an effective oral interview
Lesson Plan
Before Exploring
Either as a whole class or in small groups, have students discuss who they like to watch on television or listen to on radio. What do they like about how these people speak?
Outline the Opportunity
Direct students to 'A Sleeping Cricket' on the topic Peter Gzowski: Voice of Canada on the CBC Radio and Television Archives Web site. Provide them with the download sheet Analysis of an Interview and have them complete it to summarize and analyze the techniques and content of the clip.
Revisit and Reflect
Have students hand in their work. Assess how well they used their skills of effective listening, including identifying the purpose of the interview and making accurate notes to identify the main ideas and details.
Extension
Students can use the download sheet to analyze a radio, television, Internet, or live interview of their choice.
