Purpose
To examine events in China’s history during the 20th century

Before Exploring
Ask students for examples, descriptions, and dates of important events in China’s history during the 20th century. Record students’ answers on the board to create a timeline of Chinese history in the 20th century.
Outline the Opportunity
Divide the class into groups. Assign each group one of the following events in Chinese history to prepare a dramatization. Direct each group to the relevant clip on the topic Revolution and Evolution in Modern China on the CBC Radio and Television Archives Web site. From the fall of the Manchu Dynasty to the Second World War (Clip #1)

Each group should decide on the form of its dramatization, for example, a short skit, an interview, a simulated television broadcast, a storyboard with narration, or a debate.
Assessment Tip
Evaluate the presentations on the basis of organization, creativity, effectiveness, and the comprehensiveness and accuracy of the content. Share these criteria with students before they begin work.
Revisit and Reflect
Have students deliver their dramatizations. Discuss as a class the significance of the events in Chinese history that were dramatized. Ask students to list, in order of importance, the events they studied and presented, and to explain the reasons for their selection.
Extension
Students can prepare and present an in-depth report on one of the events presented.
