Summary
Students research and role-play a major figure in Chinese history.
Duration
1 to 2 lessons
Purpose
To identify major figures in Chinese history
Lesson Plan
Before Exploring
Ask students to find examples of important Chinese figures in newspapers, books, or on the Internet, and have them bring pictures of these people to class. Make a display of famous Chinese figures, past and present, and have students identify the people depicted in the pictures and when they lived.
Outline the Opportunity
Have students browse Revolution and Evolution in Modern China on the CBC Radio and Television Archives Web site. Assign one of the following figures from Chinese history to each student:
  • Sun Yat-sen
  • Chiang Kai-shek
  • Mao Zedong
  • Confucius
  • Emperor Qin
  • Marco Polo
  • Emperor Pu Yi
  • Yuan Shikai
  • Zhou Enlai
  • Jiang Qing
  • Deng Xiaoping
  • Wei Jing-sheng
  • Zhang Yichi
  • Hu Yaobang
  • “Tank man”

Have students research the figure. They then prepare and present a role-play to the class where they introduce themselves in role and challenge the class to identify the figure. Provide each student with the download sheet Major Figures in Chinese History. Students record notes during the presentations, and then draw a line to connect the notes to the figure as revealed.

  • Revisit and Reflect
After the presentations are completed, ask students which of these figures they think are most important. Compile and record a class list of the 10 most important figures in Chinese history.

    Assessment Tip
Collect the download sheets to assess the completeness and accuracy of the content. You might also assess students’ listening skills and note-taking skills and provide additional practice where needed.

    Extension
Students can prepare a storyboard or illustrated poster presenting information and photos on the life of one the top 10 figures in Chinese history as chosen by the class.
