Summary
In this introductory activity, students create a timeline of the events in the life of Roméo Dallaire that show why he is a great Canadian.
Duration
1 to 2 lessons
Purpose
To gather information and present it in sequence
Lesson Plan
Before Exploring
Have students form groups of two or three. Ask them to discuss and list the characteristics of a person who could be considered a great servant of Canada and the world.
Outline the Opportunity
Have students browse through the clips on Witness to Evil: Roméo Dallaire and Rwanda on the CBC Digital Archives website. They should pay particular attention to thet clips The making of a general, Evil on trial, and Senator Dallaire, and the additional clip Warmest regards, Dallaire.

After examining the clips, each small group will create a list of milestone events in Roméo Dallaire’s life. Students can discuss how each one reflects the characteristics they recorded in Before Exploring. Using their list, students create a timeline (on paper or electronic) of at least 10 events that gives a complete overview of Dallaire’s life and demonstrates the characteristics of a great Canadian.

Revisit and Reflect
Have groups share their timelines with the class. Create a large class timeline that includes the events of all the other timelines for a more complete view of Roméo Dallaire’s life. As a class, decide what the five most important milestones in his life are that illustrate his service to Canada and/or the world.
Extension
Students can reflect on Dallaire’s life and consider his current role as a senator. Have each write a paragraph predicting an act of service to Canada that he might do in the future using his role as senator. This could relate to Canada’s peacekeeping/peacemaking activities on the world stage or to domestic policy in Canada.
