On one side are the environmentalists. On the other, logging companies. In the middle are native people. The fate of Canada's old-growth forests and the forestry industry as a whole rests in the balance in the 'war of the woods.'

It used to be the frontline in the 'war of the woods' between environmentalists and the logging companies. Five years after the B.C. government banned all clearcutting in Clayoquot Sound, the chainsaws are back, and both sides are meeting again in the majestic rainforests of Vancouver Island. But this time, it's different: no war, only cooperation. • In 1999, U.S. forestry giant Weyerhaeuser merged with MacMillan Bloedel. The logging project featured in this clip was a joint venture between Weyerhaeuser and local first nations people who owned the majority shares in the company, thus giving them the power to run the logging operation. They employed an environmentally friendly form of logging that's done in pockets. The selective method means only a handful of trees are cut, so as to mimic nature when a large tree is lost to a winter storm or disease.A unique turn of events in Clayoquot Sound
